Child Life Services at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals offers a hands-on, 600-hour internship to prepare students for a career as a child life specialist. The program is available at both of our campuses, in San Francisco and Oakland.
Participants must meet certain requirements to qualify for the internship. The application process differs depending on whether you wish to intern at San Francisco or Oakland. Please see below for details.

We offer winter/spring and fall internships. We are not offering summer internships at this time. Our 2025 winter/spring internship is now filled. Our next opening for internships will be fall 2025.

Internship program structure
Interns work at the bedside with a certified child life specialist conducting therapeutic play, diagnosis teaching, preparation, procedural support, sibling support, charting and more.
The 15-week program consists of:
Internship hours are completed mostly on weekdays, with some holiday, weekend and evening hours.
A rotation supervisor is assigned to each intern. Your supervisor will meet with you once a week to discuss goals, journal entries, a case study, and specific rotations and interventions.
